Did you know that the concept of the Canada-U.S. border is relatively new? Before Europeans arrived in this area, Indigenous peoples travelled back and forth across the river, gathering food according to the seasons. Early European settlers also crossed the river frequently. It wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that the border was enforced. Complex trade agreements now govern commerce between Canada and America.
