Chief Shingwauk was the Chief of Garden River First Nation. He went by many names and is known for many accomplishments. Throughout his life (1773-1854) he always devoted himself to the well-being of the Ojibway people. Shingwauk’s vision of a cross-cultural ‘teaching wigwam’ led to the creation of Algoma University and Shingwauk University. Shingwauk is also remembered as a signatory of the Robinson-Huron Treaty and as a warrior in the War of 1812.
