Can you find this moose? Photo: Tourism Sault Ste. Marie
Moose are the largest species in the deer family. They are herbivores, eating up to 60 pounds of plants a day. The average size of an adult moose is between 1.4m and 2.1m tall, weighting as much as 700kg! Moose are usually very slow animals, but when running can reach speeds of 55km/hr. A male moose (bull) has antlers that are covered in a velvet-like material as they grow, which is shed by the fall to reveal its bone-like structure.
Moose usually live in boreal and mixed deciduous forests. But did you know that you can see them in downtown Sault Ste. Marie? Peek around the Ministry of Natural Resources building to look at one of our many “urban” moose! How many others can you find?
